“I went to college in the UK to pursue my Bachelors in Economics. This is when the money difference hit me. The UK was more expensive and even though my parents were funding the tuition costs and living expenses, it took some time getting used to budgeting expenses and managing money. I had to be careful to have enough money till the end of the month and not run out of it.”

“But the real deal came into the picture when I moved back to India. I got a job in Delhi and that’s when my relationship with my money got serious. Right from budgeting my utility expenses, rent, to actually making sure that I wasn’t living paycheque to paycheque, it all came under the scanner for me. This is when I learnt about PPF, tax-saving investments, what to do with your money. All of it was one overwhelming new world that I have opened my eyes to!”

“ Back home, my mum always handled the family finances. Taking care of everyone’s savings, making sure that all the investments are all in the right place, that the investments were all growing - all of this is my mum’s responsibility. So naturally, when I wanted advice, I turned to her.”

“I think that has shaped me into the person I am today. Growing up I always saw my mum take care of the household finances. That made me feel independent and confident. I think this is such an empowering thing to experience. Most often we see our mothers run the household, and to see them run finances not just for themselves but for the rest of the family is itself such a confidence booster!”

“I came across Basis while chatting with my sister. When I checked out the app, I came across the goal-saving section of the app and was instantly drawn towards it. I am now saving up for a trip to Europe and my mum is helping me diversify my savings in order to enable me to reach my goal faster.”

“It’s a great thing, having the women in my life help me make my decisions about my money. It makes me want to become independent and inspires me to make that effort to get there someday!”

“The financial disparity is there even today. Among my friends' circle, most often my girl-friends don’t really speak much about finances. This conversation needs to evolve. Whether it is saving up to plan for a holiday, or for your future, women should make the effort to handle things on their own.”
